Legacy Challenge with Elves #8

Last weekend I finally found some time to compete in the Legacy Challenges on Magic Online again. Coming off a couple of 5-0s with the current list, I felt like my list was heavily optimized against all the various flavours of Grixis Delver/Control as well as Czech Pile, so I was happy to give it a try in the Challenge. The 2 Mindbreak Traps in the sideboard are a kind of concession to the amount of Goblin Charbelcher I have seen lately; they might just as well be the third Cabal Therapy and 3rd Surgical Extraction, to get additional value against Sneak Show, Dredge, Lands and Reanimator.

Since I didn’t record the matches at the time, I am commentating the match replays instead, since several people had told me they’d still love to watch those. So here we go!

Decklist

Round 1 vs Sneak Show:

Round 2 vs Elves:

Round 3 vs RB Reanimator:

Round 4 vs Grixis Control:

Round 5 vs RB Reanimator:

Round 6 vs Vial Smasher Control:

Round 7:
Opponent conceded because he (17th) was paired up vs me (~5th)

Quarterfinals vs Grixis Control:

Semifinals vs Grixis Delver:

Finals vs Dragon Stompy:

Hope you guys were able to follow my explanations. It was quite interesting for me to see to what extent my decisions were consistent with my estimation of the situation while reviewing the games with you. In some way I actually felt that by reviewing these matches, I actually learned quite a bit about my own play style. Thinking about it, it would actually be pretty cool to see more people re-commentate previous matches of theirs.

So long,
Julian

Hey Julian, watching the first video vs SneakShow, have you considered sideboarding less there? You said the GSZ’s are “late game” but I’ve found they’re very helpful for my early glimpses, in finding typically Heritage or Wirewood. In your G3, if the Cabal Therapys had been GSZ, I think you could have found Heritage and had a good chance. Just thinking, if your plan is “opponent stumbles a bit and I capitalize on it”, then you might want to stay focused on your own plan and only cut the Nissas.

I would love to keep GSZ. Mostly because it’s turn1 acceleration. But the discard spells are too important not to play, and someting has to go out unfortunately.

I Julian, You are a fantastic player. I’ve seen all of your videos and I’ve never seen anybody playing elves like you.
I would like to ask you a question:
Have you ever tried shaman of the pack in the deck? Without miracle can it be an interesting teck? I won some games against lands or eldrazi thanks to him.
    Thank you

Hi Samuele, thanks a lot for the kind words! 🙂 Yes, I have played Shaman of the Pack quite a lot in the first half of 2016. If you check my archives, you can find my tournament reports from MKM Milan and MKM Frankfurt and BoM Annecy from last year where I played it! I like the card a lot and might start playing it again in the future.

I would like to try your list at the next tournament but I think I will put 1 phiting needle and 1 ruric thar (or 1 Shaman of the pack) instead of traps because charbelcher is not so present in the meta. My only problem is … how to side in and out side vs Eldrazi, lands, cawblade and turbo depths? Unfortunately I have never played against it and I dont know how to do it, can you help me? Thanks a lot (ps I go to see the videos where you play shaman of the pack;) )
