March Legacy Challenge with Elves

Time to battle again! After taking down the whole thing in February’s Legacy Challenge, this month I’m back and ready to defend my crown! Since I had been travelling a ton and working on a couple cool projects I’ll hopefully soon get to tell you more about, I didn’t really have a lot of time to play lately. Because of that, I’m mostly sticking with the list that had previously carried me to the top, only exchanging 1 Cabal Therapy in the sideboard for an additional copy of Nissa, Vital Force which has always felt amazing in the matchups I wanted her the most. This in turns weakens my SneakShow and Infect matchups, but greatly strengthens the Miracles one. With the MTGO meta being the MTGO meta and nearly 20% of the winning decklists being Miracles Shiva, destroyer of worlds, this felt like a very reasonable change. Check out how I fared this month below!

Here’s what I played:

Maindeck

4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Wirewood Symbiote
4 Elvish Visionary
4 Nettle Sentinel
3 Heritage Druid
3 Quirion Ranger
2 Birchlore Rangers
2 Craterhoof Behemoth
1 Reclamation Sage
1 Scavenging Ooze
1 Leovold, Emissary of Trest

4 Glimpse of Nature
4 Green Sun’s Zenith
3 Natural Order

4 Gaea’s Cradle
4 Windswept Heath
3 Wooded Foothills
2 Bayou
2 Cavern of Souls
2 Forest
2 Dryad Arbor
1 Pendelhaven

Sideboard

4 Abrupt Decay
3 Thoughtseize
2 Cabal Therapy
2 Surgical Extraction
2 Mindbreak Trap
2 Nissa, Vital Force

In order to prevent spoilers I put my matchups and results at the end of this post. Feel free to skip the videos if you’re just here for the raw numbers. For everyone else, here’s the commentated videos of the matches I played during this Legacy Challenge:

I played the list you’ve played in the last Challenge, and I looooved it.
But i had so awful pairings: 3 ANT, 1 BR Reanimator and 1 Miracles in the first 5 rounds (2-3), to go into two Burn decks that were a bit problematic but not as much as those (4-3 in the end).

What do you think about adding Null Rods to the side? I don’t know if they come to late to try to beat ANT or Reanimator, but they definitely help against Miracles and could also help against SneakAndShow.

Thanks for all the work you do =)

Rought matchups indeed. I’m not even happy to go up against Burn if I’m on the draw.

For about ~1.5 years, my approach to building my SB with Elves has been to avoid having any Artifacts and Enchantments that would be good in the Miracles matchup. They’ve been bringing in 2-3 Wear//Tear in the blind for over 2 years now, which are great against Choke, Null Rod, Pithing Needle etc. And because of the nature of Artifacts and Enchantments, they don’t provide an instant and lasting advantage, meaning their impact will be nullified once removed. This is different from cards like Planeswalkers, Cavern of Souls and (on a strategical level) also Surgical Extraction, which provide a lasting impact on the game.

Recently, a lot of Miracles players both online and in paper have picked up on this trend though. So let’s see where we are headed. Also note that Null Rod doesn’t do anything vs Sneak Show, so I assume you meant Pithing Needle? Overall, Needle is something I’d rather look into than Null Rod, because it’s also great in two unfavorable matchups: RG Lands and Infect. Regarding Storm, Null Rod is a fine sideboard card there, especially if you have graveyard hate since turning off LED makes it harder for them to win without using the graveyard, since Ad Nauseam is less reliable when you’re Infernal Tutors are much worse (because of a shut off LED).

I am working on becoming a combo elves guru, but I can’t figure out why to play Nissa is so good. Can you please explain this to me? I would appreciate any advice that you can give an elven newbie.

She’s great in all grindy matchups, but especially Miracles. On top of her grindy nature, she also provides an attacker with Haste, which will often be HUGE as it allows you to regain initiative. She breaks the cycle of “Terminus, untap Jace” your otherwise can’t really stop. Also, the emblem is super threatening (especially if they don’t have Entreat) and comes down very quickly.
